What to Check on Hotel Wi-Fi

Confirm the network, finish the captive portal, and test basic routing before sensitive work.

Run the check

  1. Use the same device and browser for both results.
  2. Record only the minimum details you need; do not share a full IP address publicly.
  3. Change one condition, then reload and compare.

Worked example

Ask staff for the exact network name. Disable auto-join for lookalike networks. Complete the portal, confirm HTTPS works, then compare your IP and IPv4/IPv6 results. Connect a trusted VPN if your policy requires it and repeat the comparison.

How to interpret an inconclusive result

A changed address after VPN connection is useful evidence, not a security guarantee. Avoid sensitive work if the portal, certificate warnings or connection behavior looks wrong.

Limitations

These checks observe browser-visible network behavior at one moment. They do not audit encryption, account safety, malware, every DNS route or every application on the device.
