IPv4 vs IPv6: What Is the Difference?
IPv4 and IPv6 are versions of the Internet Protocol used to identify interfaces and route network traffic. IPv6 was introduced primarily because the internet needed far more addresses than IPv4 could provide.
Address format and capacity
An IPv4 address uses 32 bits and is commonly written as four decimal numbers, for example 192.0.2.1. IPv6 uses 128 bits and hexadecimal groups, such as 2001:db8::1. The much larger IPv6 space supports vast numbers of devices without depending on the same degree of address sharing.
Why network address translation is common
IPv4 scarcity led providers and local networks to use network address translation (NAT). Several devices can share one public IPv4 address while using private addresses internally. NAT conserves addresses but adds state and complexity; it is not a substitute for a firewall.
IPv6 does not eliminate security needs
IPv6 devices can use globally routable addresses, but modern operating systems often generate temporary privacy addresses for outgoing connections. Firewalls, updates and secure configuration remain essential under both protocols.
Compatibility and dual stack
Many networks run IPv4 and IPv6 together. A website may receive traffic over either version depending on the provider, router, device and destination. Use the Terbit IPv4/IPv6 test to see what your current connection supports.
Does IPv6 improve speed?
IPv6 is not automatically faster. Performance depends on routing, network quality, DNS and implementation. A well-configured IPv6 path may outperform an indirect IPv4 path, while a problematic IPv6 configuration may create delay.
What users need to do
Most users can allow the provider and router to manage both protocols. Keep firmware current, avoid disabling IPv6 solely because it looks unfamiliar and verify that security rules cover both versions. Start with what an IP address is if you need the fundamentals.
