How Accurate Is IP Geolocation?
IP geolocation estimates where a network address is associated, not the precise physical position of a person or device. Country-level results are often useful, while city-level accuracy varies widely.
How databases build estimates
Providers combine address-allocation records, routing information, network measurements and commercial observations. The result describes an address range and is updated periodically; it is not a GPS reading.
Why the wrong city appears
An address may be registered to a provider’s office, gateway or regional network centre. Mobile traffic can exit far from the handset. VPNs, corporate networks and satellite services can also make the visible address appear in another region or country.
What each field means
The country and autonomous-system fields describe the network allocation. Region and city are estimates. Latitude and longitude often identify the centre of an area rather than a building. Use the Terbit IP location tool as an approximate network reference.
Appropriate uses
IP geolocation can help select language, estimate time zone, analyse broad traffic patterns and flag unusual account activity. High-impact decisions should not rely on it alone. Do not use a city estimate to accuse someone, deny an essential service or claim an exact location.
Improving verification
For your own device, compare results across connections and remember that a VPN intentionally changes the observed location. For security events, combine IP information with timestamps, device history and account controls. Organisations should document accuracy limits and minimise retained personal data.
Privacy perspective
A public address is visible to services you contact, but an ordinary lookup does not normally reveal a name or street address. Read what someone can realistically do with an IP address.
